INSIDE YORK - AROUND YORK

York makes an excellent jumping-off point for the marvellous countryside and unique attractions nearby.

There are literally dozens of stately homes and grand houses within striking distance of York, many of them open to the public. One of the most famous of these is Castle Howard, known to millions of television fans as the location for 'Brideshead Revisited'.

The scenic and welcoming North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds and Yorkshire Coast are all just a short drive away.

A ½ml long grass terrace and adjoining woodland, with vistas over Rievaulx Abbey (English Heritage) to Ryedale and the Hambleton Hills. There is an abundance of spring flowers and two mid-18th-century temples. The Ionic Temple, intended as a banqueting house, has elaborate ceiling paintings and fine 18th-century furniture.
