Fair Trade

York has a long and proud history of campaigning alongside the World's poor, and the city has been registered as a Fairtrade City since March 2004.
The Fairtrade City status recognises the following achievements:
• City of York Council has passed a unanimous motion supporting Fairtrade.
• Fairtrade products are available from more than 41 shops and 34 cafes and restaurants in York.
• Fairtrade products are used by over 50 workplaces & community organisations.
• There is regular media coverage and widespread popular support for York as a Fairtrade City.
• There is a Fairtrade City steering group to ensure that commitments to Fairtrade are continued.

Since 2006 York has held an annual Festival of Fairtrade and a Fairtrade Market.

There are three Starbucks in York all offering a great selection of Fairtrade coffees. All coffee shops are located in the prime shopping areas of Coney Street, Coppergate and Stonegate. It's a brilliant opportunity to get a quick caffeine fix whilst indulging in some retail therapy.

This wonderful shop was founded over 20 years ago in York, when the owner Jeremy Piercy came back from traveling in India and wanted to help the people he had seen whilst on his travels. The shop offers a range of wonderful products including African Soapstone and bone jewellery, to handmade wrapping paper from Nepal. Shared Earth has 10 shops around the country and is the biggest non-food Fairtrade retailer in UK.
