Inside York

York Carnival Saturday 16th June 2012

York Carnival is an annual event which takes place in the summer term. It is run by a committee of York University students, in collaboration with the City of York Council and showcases various talents, both from the university societies and the local community, displaying music, dance, drama and comedy acts across the centre of York.

This year is a particularly big move forward, as we hope to bring you bigger bands than ever previously seen at Carnival, including My Forever, who had their debut single 'Silken Butterflies' featured on BBC Radio 1 as a record of the week. We will also have lots of great bands from the University of York, enforcing our main aim of integrating the university with the community. The parade, headed by York Samba, will kick off at 12:15pm, and pass through the city with a large range of decorative features in follow. The main stage, now running all the way through to 8 o'clock in the evening, will also feature dancers, choirs and DJs. Over in St Sampson's Square, there will be more performances, such as juggling and drumming, accompanied by interactive workshops for both children and adults.

A boutique fair will be 'popping up' in the heart of the city for all to enjoy. There will be 15 select stalls of the finest vintage around - offering original 1930's pieces to re-designed 80's, homewears & furniture, a touch of the hand-made and even wooden toys. Best of all: free entry!!
